Compare These Two Checkout Totals
Suppose your cart contains $38 of items you need, shipping costs $6.95, and free shipping starts at $50. These are example amounts, with tax left out to keep the comparison clear.
- Buy what you need: $38 + $6.95 shipping = $44.95.
- Add a $12 item for free shipping: $38 + $12 = $50.
You remove the shipping charge but spend $5.05 more overall. If the extra item ends up forgotten in a drawer, that purchase has made the order more expensive.
When Adding Something Does Make Sense
Start with your actual shopping list. A product you would otherwise buy next week can be a useful addition, especially if its price compares well elsewhere. Check the size or quantity too; a small package can look inexpensive while costing more per use.
The gap matters. In another example, a $47 cart with the same $6.95 shipping fee totals $53.95. Adding a qualifying $3 item to reach $50 would reduce your immediate total by $3.95, assuming shipping is then free.
Check another route before filling the cart. Search OFree for free shipping offers, store pickup options, or coupon codes that may help with the purchase you already planned.
Make the Decision on the Final Screen
Apply any coupon before comparing your options, then check whether the order still qualifies for free shipping. Include taxes and any remaining fees in the final comparison. If free pickup is offered, consider whether collecting the order fits a trip you were already making.
Ask where and when you will use it. A clear answer makes it easier to judge whether the added cost is worthwhile.
