How to Get a Free Government Phone & Lifeline Service

How to Get a Free Government Phone & Lifeline Service

If your household qualifies for Lifeline, you could get a $0 monthly phone plan and, with some providers, a free smartphone. The phone comes from the wireless company; Lifeline helps cover the service cost.

Who Qualifies for Lifeline?

You may qualify if you or someone in your household receives SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit. Household income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines is another route. Additional qualifying programs apply on eligible Tribal lands.

Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household: an individual or people who live together and share income and expenses.

Where to Check Free Phones & Monthly Service

  • AirTalk Wireless: Lists $0 smartphone options, including some Apple and Samsung models. Enter your ZIP code to see the phones and Lifeline plans available locally. Cintex Wireless now directs new applicants to AirTalk.
  • SafeLink Wireless: Offers free monthly talk, text and data for eligible customers. Review the benefits available in your state and confirm your phone options before enrolling.
  • Assurance Wireless: Provides free monthly service on T-Mobile’s network. Its free-phone offer is for eligible California customers; elsewhere, check low-cost devices or bring-your-own-phone options.

How to Apply for a Lifeline Phone

  1. Start with your ZIP code. Choose a provider serving your area. Compare coverage, included data and any phone, shipping or activation charges.
  2. Confirm your eligibility. Follow the provider’s Lifeline application instructions. You may need proof of identity, address, income or participation in a qualifying program.
  3. Finish enrollment after approval. Confirm your device choice and follow the activation instructions for your phone or SIM. Lifeline approval alone does not activate phone service.

Check the phone’s final price before submitting your order. A $0 monthly service plan can still come with a paid device or optional upgrades.

Keep Your Free Service Active

Use a no-cost Lifeline service at least once every 30 days. Respond to any eligibility-renewal request by the stated deadline so your benefit stays active.
