Price Adjustments: How to Get Money Back After a Price Drop

Price Adjustments: How to Get Money Back After a Price Drop

A sale that starts a few days after a purchase can be frustrating. At some stores, shoppers can request the lower price on an eligible item and receive a refund of the difference while keeping the purchase.

This is often called a price adjustment. Target, Kohl's and Best Buy offer versions of it, with different deadlines and ways to submit a request.

What a Price Adjustment Can Save

For a simple example, a shopper pays $60 for an item that drops to $45 the following week. An approved adjustment could return the $15 price difference. The original purchase stays in place.

The comparison is between the amount actually paid and the new eligible price. A $60 item bought with a discount for $48 offers a much smaller potential refund when its price falls to $45.

Target's Price Match Guarantee includes eligible price drops at Target.com, the local Target store and certain automatic Target Circle deals. The item must match, including its size, color and model. Clearance and promotional gift card offers are excluded.

Kohl's price adjustment policy covers eligible regular-price and sale purchases with an original dated receipt. Clearance and BOGO offers are excluded. A coupon used on the original purchase must still be valid to apply to an adjustment.

Best Buy matches its own lower store, website or app price on qualifying purchases during the return and exchange period. Its guarantee covers eligible new items sold by Best Buy, excluding Marketplace, clearance, refurbished and open-box products.

The Details Needed for a Request

A receipt or order confirmation provides the purchase date, product details and amount paid. The current product page or digital ad shows the lower price. Keeping both available saves time when customer service reviews the request.

Target requires the live online price or digital ad rather than a screenshot. A shopper can show it on a phone, and a team member verifies it. For an online order, the order number and item information are useful to have ready.

Size and color matter. A sale on the blue version of a jacket may not apply to the black one already purchased, even when the product names look almost identical.

A Quick Check After a Larger Purchase

A price check can be worthwhile after buying a small appliance, electronics or several clothing items. The store's weekly sale provides a convenient time to look, while the purchase date keeps the request within its window.

OFree's Target deals and Kohl's deals pages can point to a new sale worth comparing with a recent receipt. The retailer's current price and policy determine whether an adjustment is available.
