Check the model age and update support. Older Chromebooks have an automatic-update expiration date, older Windows laptops may not officially support current Windows versions, and an inexpensive MacBook may no longer receive the latest macOS updates.

Check the memory and storage. A machine with 4GB of RAM can handle light browser use, but 8GB gives Windows and multitasking more room. Very small 16GB or 32GB storage is easier to manage on a Chromebook than on a Windows laptop.

Check the condition, battery and seller. For refurbished or pre-owned computers, review the return policy, warranty and included charger. An older battery or missing accessory can change the real value of a seemingly inexpensive laptop.
