Store Rewards Explained: CVS, Walgreens, Target & Walmart

CVS ExtraBucks, Walgreens Cash, Target Circle Rewards and Walmart Cash can all reduce a future purchase, but they do not work the same way. Some offers apply automatically, while others must be activated before you shop.

The important part is knowing what you pay today, what you earn for later and whether the reward is tied to a product, spending amount or expiration date.

How the Four Rewards Programs Differ

  • CVS ExtraBucks: earned through qualifying ExtraCare activity and advertised ExtraBucks promotions. Available rewards can be applied to eligible future CVS purchases.
  • Walgreens Cash: earned from qualifying purchases and promotional offers. Some promotions must be clipped or activated before checkout.
  • Target Circle Rewards: separate from regular Target Circle Deals. Many deals apply automatically for recognized members, while personalized Bonuses may require activation and specific purchases.
  • Walmart Cash: often connected to Manufacturer Offers saved in the Walmart app or on Walmart.com before purchasing the qualifying product.

In every case, check the individual promotion. Joining the loyalty program does not guarantee that every available bonus will activate itself.

Find the Program You Actually Use

The most valuable rewards program is usually attached to a store where you already shop. A larger reward at another retailer is not very useful if it encourages an extra trip or expires before you return.

Three Rules Before You Shop

  1. 1
    Activate the Offer

Clip or save any required promotion before purchasing the qualifying products.

  2. 2
    Check the Required Total

Read how coupons, excluded products and other discounts affect a spend-based offer.

  3. 3
    Plan the Next Purchase

Treat the reward as future store credit and make sure you can use it before any displayed expiration date.

Do Not Spend $30 Just to Earn $5

Rewards work best when they appear on products already on your shopping list. If you planned to spend $18, adding $12 of unnecessary merchandise to earn $5 back leaves you spending more, not saving more.

Start with the products you need, activate matching offers and consider the reward a bonus for a later purchase. That keeps the program working for your budget instead of turning it into a reason for another shopping trip.
